Article #5 - FAQ – How long should I PRACTICE??!

My standard answer to my students when they ask "how much should I practice?" is, "how much do you want to improve?"  But to be more specific, practicing to learn a piece of music is different than practicing to improve your vocal skills.  The voice is a system of interlocking muscle and nerve responses.  The voice must be exercised to gain skill and to build flexibility and strength.  Vocal skills are developed while exercising the voice and singing exercises, not while singing songs.  The repetition that happens in vocalizing is necessary to ingrain good habits and build muscle memory.  Singing a song is a happy way to use your good habits and develop artistry.

To give you a time frame-if you spend 7 to 10 minutes every day singing exercises to develop a particular vocal skill you will notice an overall improvement within 30 days.  If you practice one hour once a week, your progress will be slow and negligible.  If you don't exercise at all there will be no progress and almost certainly the vocal capabilities will diminish.

Remember:
     1. A little practice every day produces maximum results.
     2. Your brain understands on the first repetition what you want, muscles need to have repetition to develop.
     3.  Patience and persistence pays off!!

To summarize these past 5 articles on frequently asked questions:
     1,  Air is free!
     2.  Relax and let it happen.
     3.  Space resonates.
     4.  Sing easy and often to strengthen the passaggio.
     5.  A little practice everyday produces maximum results.
     6.  Patience and persistence pays off.
